The “Dragon Kingdom” is more fully developed in later chapters. It is based on the Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Mercia when, in the 6th-7th centuries, it was just coming into its own. There are several breaks in the historic royal linage of up to ten years at a time; this allows for the Talymar story to be interwoven. The Mercians, the Middil Engles or Middle Angles, were the ‘border people’ – on the border of many other kingdoms, i.e. in the middle of and surrounded by other kingdoms – and in the middle of what would be come England. The “Wolf Kingdom” – the East Kingdom – is East Anglia, founded by and dominated at this time by the Wulfingas family dynasty. It is presumed that the man [possibly] buried in the Sutton Hoo ship burial was an East Anglican, Wulfingas, king from the time period of the novel.

The Dragon Standard is created in two separate chapters – Grandfather [Book 1] and Stamford Bridge [Book 3]. The colors of red and white are from Anglo Saxon history and mythology where the white dragon of the Saxons strives against the red dragon of the Welsh, the ancient Britons.
